Indonesia’s ban on corn imports has severely affected pig farmers who rely on home-mixed feed as they have to compete disproportionately with feed millers to source local corn. According to Sauland Sinaga, Chairman of the Indonesian Monogastric Association, sorghum can be a good alternative to corn. “I have tried sorghum at my pig farm in Kuningan, West Java.
The result was positive. Sorghum-based feed delivered similar pig production performance with corn-based feed,” he told Asian Agribiz. For starter pigs, he said the grain can be used at 20%. However, for grower and finisher pigs, it can totally replace corn.
