Syngenta buy gives China access to GMO technology

China National Chemical Corp’s proposed USD 43 billion purchase of global Swiss agribusiness Syngenta AG has important implications for the seed sector. While both companies are major agrochemical producers, the purchase will also give ChemChina access to Syngenta’s seed technology, which is heavily oriented to GMO crops.

China has been slow to adopt GMO technology directly, and slow to approve GMO imports, but the acquisition, due to be finalised by the end of the year, will create a powerful advocate for GMO technology in the Chinese agricultural sector.
